Is Your Teen's TikTok Skincare Routine Doing More Harm Than Good?
Search "skincare routine" on TikTok and you'll find ten-step routines, acid exfoliants and retinol serums, recommended by influencers with no dermatology training and no idea how old their audience actually is. If you're asking whether your teen's TikTok skincare routine is safe, you're not the only parent wondering. The short answer: some of it is useful. A lot of it wasn't built for skin that's still developing.
What's actually in a "TikTok routine"
The routines going viral right now tend to follow the same formula: cleanser, toner, exfoliating acid, vitamin C serum, retinol, moisturiser, SPF. Sometimes more. These products were formulated for adult skin dealing with adult concerns - fine lines, sun damage, hyperpigmentation built up over decades. Teenage skin isn't dealing with any of that. When a 12-year-old copies a 10-step routine built for a 35-year-old's skin, the mismatch is the problem, not any single product.
Why young skin reacts differently
Teen skin is still maturing. The skin barrier - the outermost layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out - hasn't finished developing the way it will by early adulthood, which makes it more reactive to strong actives and more easily disrupted by over-cleansing or over-exfoliating (we've gone into more detail on how the barrier works in What is the Skin Barrier?). Strip that barrier with too many actives too soon, and you tend to see the opposite of what the routine promised: redness, breakouts, tightness and sensitivity that wasn't there before.
Ingredients worth a second look
Not everything trending is off-limits, but a few categories are worth checking before your teen adds them to their routine:
- Retinol and retinoids: effective for adult skin concerns, but not something teenage skin needs, and a common cause of irritation when used too early or too often.
- High-strength acid exfoliants: glycolic and salicylic acid at adult-strength concentrations, used daily instead of occasionally.
- Layering multiple actives at once: a routine that stacks retinol, vitamin C and acids in the same week gives the skin barrier no time to recover between steps.
- Heavily fragranced formulas: fine for some skin, but a common trigger for sensitivity and reactivity in younger or more reactive skin types.
What actually works for teen skin
The evidence-backed approach for teenage skin is simpler than most TikTok routines suggest: a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser and a barrier-supportive moisturiser, without retinol or harsh actives. That's the entire routine - no ten steps required. It's the same principle behind alcheMe's Fragrance Free Cleanser and Moisturiser, formulated specifically for ages 9–17, dermatologically tested, with no retinol and no harsh actives, and a fragrance-free option for teens with more reactive skin.
If your teen already has a full routine
If your teen has already built up a shelf of products, you don't need to stage an intervention. A calmer approach: pull the routine back to basics for two to three weeks - cleanser and moisturiser only - and watch how their skin responds. If redness, tightness or breakouts settle down, that's a fairly clear sign the previous routine was doing more work against their skin than for it. From there, actives can be reintroduced one at a time, slowly, so it's obvious what's actually helping and what isn't. It's also worth asking where the routine came from. A lot of teens are following whatever performed well in their algorithm that week, not what's suited to their actual skin type or concern. A five-minute conversation about that difference tends to do more good than removing products one by one.
A few questions worth asking before trying a trend
Before your teen adds a new product to their routine, it's worth checking:
- Is this formulated for teen or young skin, or is it an adult product?
- Does it contain retinol or high-percentage actives?
- Has it been dermatologically tested?
- Is there a fragrance-free option, in case their skin is more reactive than expected?
TikTok isn't going away, and teens will keep discovering skincare there. The goal isn't to shut that down - it's to give them (and you) a quick way to sense-check what's actually landing in their bathroom cabinet. A simple, barrier-first routine will always outperform a trending ten-step one, especially on skin that's still finding its feet.
